Action Alert: State Budget, 5/17

As you might have heard, Governor Pawlenty held a news conference this afternoon at the State Capitol. In his remarks, he declared that there would be no special session and that he would balance the budget “on his own if he has to.”

Unfortunately, Governor Pawlenty has been unwilling to compromise with the DFL leadership to find a sensible solution to our state’s budget crisis.

We need your help to make sure that he receives a strong message in the coming days — he will not decide the future of this state by himself.

Instead of taking a balanced approach, Pawlenty borrows, shifts and cuts so deeply that it results in the loss of thousands of private-sector jobs, negatively affecting Minnesota’s working families.

This weekend in neighborhoods throughout Minnesota, we’ll be going door-to-door encouraging folks to call Governor Pawlenty. With so much at stake, we need as many Minnesotans as possible to call the governor and ask him to stop being so stubborn and come to the table.

We’ll be handing out a flyer that encourages Minnesotans to call Governor Pawlenty to tell him that we want a balanced approach to a balanced budget. Click here to download a copy for yourself to distribute.

DFLers will gather on Saturday in Saint Paul to talk to their neighbors to encourage them to call Governor Pawlenty…

A Fine Grind Coffee Shop

St. Paul, MN 55104

Contact: Beth Commers, bethcommers@donjek.com, 651-227-3922

If you’d like to organize a group to walk in your area, please contact Jaime Tincher, (651) 251-6310 or jtincher@dfl.org.

Regardless of if you can make it Saturday, please consider taking the very important step of calling the Governor right now.

By making just one phone call in the coming days, you can help save 10,000 private sector jobs, keep 110,000 Minnesotans from losing health insurance and cut wasteful government spending. Will you do that?

Call Governor Pawlenty right now at (651) 296-3391 or 1-800-657-3717.

Tell him you want a balanced approach to a balanced budget.

Reach out to our neighbors, 3/23

Rick Varco is planning a “reach out to our neighbors” phone bank for SD64 DFL on Monday, March 23, from 5:30-8:30pm. The calls will be super-easy (not asking for money, not asking for support, just sharing some upcoming community opportunities and asking for party affiliation), the goal is to make a dent in the remaining unidentified voters in SD64. We will gather at the SIEU State Council Call Center (no dialing, no busy numbers, no unanswered ringing) on the 4th floor of 2233 University Ave. Please RSVP to info@sd64dfl.org to let us know you’ll be there.

SD64 Capitol Luncheon, 3/10

We would like to invite you to one of our traditional constituent luncheons at the Capitol. You may have already had the opportunity to join us for one of these informal gatherings in the past. As before, you and your neighbors will have the opportunity to talk to your legislators about any concerns you may have for the 2009 Minnesota Legislature and learn about what has already happened.

We will be having one luncheon this year for District 64, so you will have the opportunity to meet with Senator Cohen, Representative Murphy (64A), Representative Paymar (64B), and meet your neighbors in District 64. The luncheon will be Tuesday, March 10th, from 11:30 – 1:00 in the State Capitol, room 118.

Box lunches and a beverage are available upon request from Cecil’s Deli at the cost of $9.00. We will have a variety of sandwiches and drinks available. Please order your lunch ahead of time! Otherwise, please feel free to bring your own lunch.

Room 118 is on the first floor of the Capitol building, near Senator Cohen’s office. You may purchase your box lunch when you arrive. Please make your check payable to the Cohen Volunteer Committee on the day of the luncheon. Try to arrive early to allow time for parking and getting your lunch. Although parking will be at a premium during session, there are two and four hour parking meters on either side of the streets north, southwest, and southeast of the Capitol building.

After lunch you are welcome to remain at the Capitol to observe a committee hearing or the full House or Senate if they are in session that day. We will have schedules available for you if you are interested in attending any of the committee meetings. Building tours are also available from the Historical Society, free of charge. They begin every hour on the hour and last for 45 minutes.

Please contact Kim Babine in Senator Cohen’s office, 651-296-5931
or via email, to RSVP and to order your lunch! We look forward to seeing you at the luncheon.
