First letter: Opposing the XL

I oppose having diluted bitumen, acidic crude oil pulled from tar sands, pouring down the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. It has a reasonable chance of leaking into the source of water for America’s breadbasket, the Ogallala aquifer. The State Department’s 45-day public comment period ended April 22. Nearly a million voices cried out, mostly opposed to building the XL pipeline. The EPA reported “environmental objections” due to concerns like “… (greenhouse gas) emissions from oil sands crude could be 81 percent greater than emissions from the average crude refined in the United States.”

A foreign corporation, TransCanada, would build and maintain this pipeline to access the global market. Both the Cornell University Global Labor Institute and the State Department have debunked the job creation myth. TransCanada still has an environmental disaster on its hands in the Kalamazoo River, due to the 2010 Enbridge diluted bitumen spill. Ten oil spills have occurred in the United States and Canada since March 19, including the 5,000-barrel spill in Mayflower, Ark. Ranchers, environmentalists and scientists agree: Oppose the building of the XL pipeline.

Central & Executive Committee This Wednesday!!
We are having our next Central and Executive Committee Meeting this Wednesday, April 10. We will be meeting at 7:00 pm in Room 150, Olin-Rice Hall of Macalester College (1600 Grand Ave.). As always our meetings will not last longer than an hour and we will adjourn to Groveland Tap following the meeting. Please join us next week to catch up on what has been going on in the district and at the capitol so far this legislative session. We are anticipating candidates for school board and one of our legislators to attend – see what they have been up to so far! See you then!

Please join us for the December Central Committee meeting on this Wednesday, December 12 from 7:00 – 8:00 pm. We will be meeting in Room 150 of Olin-Rice Hall on the Macalester College campus. As always our meetings will go no longer than one hour and we will adjourn to Groveland Tap after the meeting. Dick, Erin, and Michael win reelection!

Congratulations to Dick Cohen, Erin Murphy, and Michael Paymar on winning reelection to the Minnesota Senate and House and becoming the majority in both bodies! Erin’s candidate recruitment and our flying squad contributed to the wide DFL victory, winning the Minnesota House and Senate for the DFL. We also delivered the state for President Barak Obama and Senator Amy Klobuchar, and CD 4 for Betty McCollum. And both constitutional amendments have been defeated. In fact, it could be argued that turnout driven by the very close amendment vote drove the wider victories. Back home in Saint Paul we also won the school levy question. What a great election evening! Thanks to everyone for all the hard work this year. No excuses, now we have to deliver the best government Minnesota has ever seen.

Next Central Committee Meeting in December

Friends, the officers of SD64 DFL have decided to cancel our November meeting, previously scheduled for 11/14. We think everyone deserves bit of break on the week after the election!

Our next SD64 DFL Central Committee meeting will be 7pm on 12 December in Macalester’s Olin Rice building, room 150.
