Please join us in Rm. 150, Olin-Rice Hall, Macalester College for our May 9 meeting. We will start at 7pm and the meeting will last one hour. If you have any questions please contact us at info@sd64dfl.org. Cristine Almeida, Chair of the Families United Board (the group organizing against the anti-marriage amendment) will be giving a special presentation on how to talk to people about the anti-marriage amendment. A great opportunity to learn how to reach out to defeat this amendment.

Precinct/Associate Chair Training, 5/9

There will be a training session for Precinct Chairs and Associate Chairs at 6pm on Wednesday, May 9. The meeting will take place in Olin-Rice Hall, Rm. 150 before the Executive Committee meeting. We encourage precinct chairs to stay for the 7pm Meeting and the 8pm adjournment to Groveland tap.

New Obama Campaign Office, 5/6

The Obama campaign is going to be opening its Minnesota HQ in St. Paul this Sunday, May 6 from 2:15 to 4:30pm at 920 Selby Avenue. On behalf of the campaign, I wanted to extend a special invitation for you to join Sen. Franken, Rep. McCollum and OFA’s campaign staff and volunteers as we open our doors to the St. Paul and CD4 community. Fill out this RSVP form and send to your friends, colleagues and supporters. We hope to see you on Sunday.

The Obama campaign is still in need of desks, chairs and tables. If you have any you can donate or lend, please contact either us at info@sd64dfl.org.

Spring Fundraiser (not yet)

Please join us on ~~Wednesday, May 2 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.~~ at Sweeney’s Saloon. Enjoy a cold beverage with friends and neighbors while we discuss the end of the 2012 legislative session. Then pitch in a few dollars to help your local senate district as we look toward re-taking the majority in November! Thanks for all your help and support!

UPDATE: Due to the extension of the legislative session, the spring fundraiser has been postponed.

Adopted Resolutions from the 2012 Convention

At the 2012 SD64DFL Convention, delegates adopted 38 resolutions that will continue on to the CD4 convention for consideration in the statewide DFL platform. You can view the results of the resolutions ballot here.

Our new Secretary Katie Gasper went off to the Post Office with the Official Notice for this year’s Central and Executive Committee Meetings. Thanks to Bernie Hesse who helped label and stuff. We’ll see you at 7pm on April 11 at Macalester’s Olin Rice 250.

Thank you to everyone who attended the convention yesterday and a special thanks to all volunteers and donors who helped make it a success. And if you didn’t make it, we missed you and hope you join us for an upcoming event. As we wrap things up, I’m writing to update you on the activities and make a special plea to help retire the debt. (If you want to help without reading further, visit our donations page.)

Here are some of the important highlights:

U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Brian Bergson led us in the pledge of allegiance and helped us remember those who are serving our country.
We welcomed new neighbors from the old SD66.
More than 303 out of 552 eligible delegates/alternates attended.
We adopted a new constitution.
We elected 29 delegates & alternates to attend the state and 4th CD conventions.
We elected a new slate of officers, directors, and delegates to the State Central Committee and 4th CD. Our new officers include Elizabeth Wefel, Chair; Rick Varco, Associate Chair; Katie Gasper, Secretary; Eric Celeste, Treasurer; Ann Mongoven, Affirmative Action Officer; and Adam Chelseth, Fundraising Chair. You can also check out the entire slate of directors and alternates.
More than 271 people voted on resolutions. Our resolutions team is finalizing results and will post to our website soon.

Conventions cost money — lots of money. Room rental (more than $1000), sound system (provided at the request of several hard of hearing delegates), supplies, printing (hundreds of agendas, constitutions, resolutions, ballots, signs), postage and more. We try to economize where we can — that’s why we ask that folks share copies of the resolutions, but printing alone cost more than $800. Thank you everyone who contributed, we appreciate it. Unfortunately we fell short — at least $1000 short.

Campaign Rules for SD64 DFL 2012 Convention

The Convention will take place at 12:30 on Sunday March 25 in the Central High School gymnasium, we invite campaign staff to arrive at 11:30am so that you may prepare. Candidates may also set up early on Saturday the 24th between 1 and 2pm.

Those running for office within Senate District/House District 64 will have 5 minutes to address the convention. All other incumbent DFL office holders, declared DFL candidates for public office, party dignitaries, and speakers on state ballot issues may speak at the discretion of the Convention Chair for one minute.

Any candidate or issue campaign may purchase a table for $30 and/or a room for $75.

Signs may be posted in two places only: your campaign’s specified section behind the stage and behind the campaign’s table (if purchased). You must bring your own blue tape to post signs. No stickers are allowed, though literature may be handed out from your table to willing recipients. Everything a candidate puts up must be taken down at the end of the convention; for each sign found, the candidate’s campaign will be charged $50.

From the convention rules:

12. The Arrangements Committee shall designate an equal portion of wall space behind the stage assigned by lot for the exclusive use of each campaign for DFL endorsement that requests such space from the Arrangements Committee. Campaigns may also post signs on their tables and in their hospitality rooms. These are the only places signs may be posted indoors. No stickers shall be worn, distributed, or posted. Campaign literature may only be placed on candidate tables or given directly to willing delegates. No moving demonstrations are permitted during balloting. There shall be no disruptive demonstrations in the galleries. Each delegation will be responsible for collecting materials and garbage. Whistles, air horns, bull horns, and strobe lights or other similar devices will not be allowed during the convention in the convention hall.

14. Except as noted in Rules 21 and 23, incumbent DFL office holders, declared DFL candidates for public office, other party dignitaries, and speakers on state ballot issues may address the convention at the discretion of the Convention Chair. Such visitors will be requested to limit their remarks to no more than one minute.
